Branimir Bratonov said that despite western sanctions, Iran’s drug police has well-equipped for fighting drug-traffickers. Bratonov was visiting Gen. Ali Moayedi head of Iran's anti-narcotics police in Tehran.
Bratanov also believed that the meetings hopefully provide ways for Iran to obtain facilities necessary to border controls, however, what he and Iranian officials have been convinced that Iran, with little facilities, has launched serious and competent campaign against drug trafficking.
In eastern part, Iran has borders with Afghanistan, a country with highest opium and other drugs production in the world. Iran’s geography has made it the best corridor for drug trafficking by traffickers trading drugs from Afghanistan to Europe.
Drug trafficking fighting has brought about billions of dollars and thousands of human forces tolls for Iran. With hard-working staff, Iran has confiscated 89 per cent of global total drugs trafficked, which makes Iran a pioneer country in fighting drug trafficking.
Police in Iran believe that since the invasion of Afghanistan by the US and NATO, drugs production has increased 40 fold. According to UN estimations, Afghanistan produced 185 tons of opium annually. Since the invasion, it has become 3400 tons annually. In 2007, opium world trade rose to staggering 8200 tons. Afghan and western authorities blame the change on NATO and Washington, and believe that since 12 years, the US and allied forces have ignored the drugs problem.
